CHILDHOOD TRAVEL DREAMS

When I was a young teenager I remember my Mother telling me
about her travel dreams when she was a teenager and about the
travel books she enjoyed reading. Her two main dreams were to
visit China and the Amazon and when I left school at fifteen I went
into the travel business in the hope that I could realise her dreams
for her.

After many years in the business doing various jobs I managed to
secure for her a six week escorted tour of China in the late 1970's.
She was prepared to travel on her own and to meet up with others
in China. She always loved to write about what she did and this trip
was to be no exception and in her perfect handwriting she wrote
dozens of pages about her trip which I still treasure to this day.

Her other dream was the Amazon, but alas before I could arrange
this for her she died suddenly and her dream was unfulfilled.
Nevertheless I was happy that she enjoyed China, and in those days
the cash for the trip was high but she took the bull by the horns, filled
her purse with as much spending money that she could and had the
time of her life.

The reason for this short personal story is that all too often people put
off today in the hope that tomorrow will be a better time to do such an
adventurous trip. This can be a dangerous idea as we are not privy as to
what the future will hold. It could be bad health, bad wealth and a myriad
of other reasons, I have heard them all in my long travel career.

My Mother took every opportunity she could, and some she had to delay
and others which were the long haul trips she would always take even if she
had to scrape the barrel for those extra pennies.

We are here for a relatively short time. Please do not waste the opportunites
when they arise because it has saddened me on many occaisions when
customers have returned to make a holiday booking and they are without
their partner. These are sad stories.

Please realise your childhood dreams and book early. If you have any unique
destinations and need some help, I will be pleased to do so !

'Chop Shop Style'Makeover Will Include Piazza Atrium, Tea Lounge, Pizzeria and Nightclub

The most significant transformation ever of a Princess Cruises ship will occur this spring aboard UK dedicated ship, Grand Princess. During a 24-day makeover the ship, which was the prototype for the line’s “Grand Class” vessels, will undergo a remarkable renovation to receive many of Princess’s trademark features introduced since the ship’s 1998 debut, including the signature Piazza atrium. Several new features will be also be added including a unique tea lounge and library called “Leaves”; and “Alfredo’s,” a full-service pizzeria showcasing this renowned Princess dish.

A brand new nightclub called One5, inspired by its deck location, will be created on the top deck of the ship, replacing its iconic Skywalker Nightclub, which has given the ship its distinctive profile. Skywalkers will be removed from its 18th deck perch, with its replacement located on deck 15. This change will significantly improve the operational performance of the ship, including greater fuel efficiency.

“This is the largest makeover we’ve ever undertaken for any of our ships,” said Pieter van der Schee, head of brand marketing Princess Cruises UK. “Grand Princess was the most innovative cruise ship when she was launched and is already very popular in Britain. With the latest innovations from her recent sister ships added she will be an even greater attraction for British cruisers looking for a pampering, relaxing holiday.”

The changes will be made during a drydock from April 11 to May 4 at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas ahead of Grand Princess’s return to Southampton for a programme of summer cruises. Highlights of the dramatic makeover include:

· Crown Grill – A classic steakhouse with rich wood surroundings, this specialty restaurant features an open, theatre-style kitchen where chefs custom-prepare premium aged beef and fresh seafood items, including live lobsters.

· Leaves Tea Lounge and Library – A fusion of tea lounge and library, the new Leaves offers a distinctive opportunity for passengers to custom-blend a variety of base teas with herbs, fruits and spices to create a personalised tea blend. Created in partnership with Mighty Leaf Tea Company, one of the world’s premier makers of artisan teas, Leaves will give passengers an impressive choice of up to 500 different tea blends to suit their palates. A trained tea sommelier will assist passengers in blending a personalized tea creation, which they can enjoy in the midst of the library and a good book.

· Alfredo’s Pizzeria – Known for serving the best pizza at sea, Princess will introduce Alfredo’s, a new sit-down pizzeria with an enticing menu of freshly-prepared individual-size pizzas. Named for the line’s master executive chef, Alfredo Marzi, the pizzeria will feature an open kitchen where passengers can watch chefs create the pizzas they’ll enjoy with a glass of wine or other beverage.

· One5 Lounge – The new One5 lounge will replace Skywalkers as the place to be for nighttime dancing and relaxing. The new lounge on deck 15 (hence its name) takes its inspiration from the chicest urban nightclubs, and will offer a cool vibe, contemporary seating and lighting, and a dramatic back-lit bar.

· Crown Grill – A classic steakhouse with rich wood surroundings, this specialty restaurant features an open, theatre-style kitchen where chefs custom-prepare premium aged beef and fresh seafood items, including live lobsters.

Also part of the renovation will be 10 new suites; remodelled casino, boutiques and art gallery; enhancements to the Horizon Court, Lotus Spa, and wedding chapel; and the addition of Crooner’s Martini Lounge.

The newly renovated Grand Princess will debut in Southampton on 21 May with new itineraries to offer more choice to past passengers, as well as a 3-night Weekend Sampler to offer new customers an opportunity to try out the brand. In addition to her popular 14-night Mediterranean cruises and 7-night short-breaks Grand Princess will sail two 17-night cruises from the UK to the central Med, including Venice, an 11-night cruise to the Canary Islands and Madeira, and a 14-night cruise to Norway and Spitsbergen.

HOLLAND AMERICA LINE - Cruises

My favourite cruise line for the last twenty five years ! ! !

Spacious elegance sets Holland America Line apart from its contemporaries
in the cruise business. Their spacious and luxurious mid sized ships allow
you to travel effortlessly to new discoveries.

The Holland America experience can be summed up in many ways, and one
of the best is:- 'To feel the sun warm your face and a gracious smile warm
your heart'.

Throughout the fleet of fifteen cruise ships, the public rooms are rich, with
polished woods and comfortable furnishings, create an inviting atmosphere
in which to gather. Lavish, fresh floral arrangements along with museum
quality paintings and a variety of antiques set a luxurious tone. And
everywhere you look you'll sense a meticulous attention to detail that
underscores the pride Holland America takes in its 135 year seafaring
heritage.

From the moment you arrive on board you are welcomed as an honoured
friend would be at a fine private home. Discreet and gracious personal
service is, for many, the ultimate luxury; and the crew at Holland America
Line is the reason so many return to cruise with them, time and again.

I think that life aboard a Holland America Line cruise ship is far less
frenetic than some other lines. You have time to truly relax and enjoy
the ambience of ship board life, superb gourmet meals, a kaleidoscope
of cocktails from the myriad of bars, great entertainment in the ships
show lounges, the tranquility of the library, the activities of the swimming
pool, to name but a few.

Your chosen stateroom or suite is your home away from home, your very
own space which is serviced at least twice a day, a place to remember all
the days activities and to sleep and dream of all the exciting days to come.

The Holland America Line cruise brochure is crammed full of exciting
cruises and destinations, covering the globe and of varying durations.
I have picked a few which I think would be of interest and these are as

CIRCUMNAVIGATE the UNITED KINGDOM

Sailing around the UK has become a very popular cruise over the last few years as more and more cruise lines offer this facility. We must be interested in other parts of our own country as there are more than fifteen, 'around UK sailings' this year.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines is no exception, and during late summer this year they are offering two nine day cruises, one departing from Rosyth and the other from Dover. Generally the weather is fine and dry and hopefully will be so when you take the cruise as well.

Details of the two cruises are as follows:-

BOUDICCA. 1st September 2011. 9 nights. Based on twin share.
Rosyth - Kirkwall - Belfast - Dublin - Milford Haven - Guernsey -
Portsmouth - Rosyth.
CABINS: Inside £715 pp. Outside £915 pp. Superior Outside £1049 pp.

BLACK WATCH. 25 September 2011. 9 nights. Based on twin share.
Dover - Milford Haven - Dublin - Belfast - Greenock - Ullapool -
Kirkwall - Dover.
CABINS: Inside £715 pp. Outside £915 pp. Superior Outside £1049 pp.

These are great value prices and are surely to sell quickly and to get these prices you must book by the 28th February. Cabins will be allocated on a first come basis, based on the best cabin available in your chosen grade. And that is a very good reason to book early.

Our helpful and knowledgeable reservations staff are awaiting your call.

ALASKA ! ALASKA ! ALASKA !

A must in your lifetime is to visit ALASKA and there are wonderful ALL INCLUSIVE
cruise lines that will satisfy your spirit of adventure.

On a personal note I prefer to visit Alaska, The Yukon and British Columbia during
spring and early summer. The reason for this is as the winter snows melt there are
torrents of water nearly everywhere plus small and large waterfalls. The sound of
fast moving water coupled with clean fresh air is a real tonic to one and makes you
feel good. Late summer and autumn there is usually a lot less water flowing and
there are more 'still rockpools' about which our insect friends find very habitable.

An Alaskan cruise for seven nights is about right and should you have the time,
thoroughly recommended, I would suggest another week to ten days for land
arrangements to make your holiday a truly memorable one. It is best to do the
land arrangements first followed by the cruise except when cruising southbound.
Call me to discuss your ideas on ....... 023 80 714792.

Sea Dream Yacht Club

Greetings Everyone,

Every so often in life, something different or special comes along which you cannot resist. One of those moments has just landed on my desk and I feel I must share this with you. It is a cruise with a difference and an experience that will remain with you for many years.

I am talking about a small five star luxury cruise company called 'Sea Dream Yacht Club' and the experience is luxury yachting. With their two ships you can enjoy Yachting in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Northern European itineraries.

Chic, relaxed and utterly distinct from traditional cruising, 'Sea Dream Yacht Club' has been rated the world's best boutique cruise line in the world every year since 2003 (source: The Berlitz Guide to Cruising). What sets them apart isn't just the intimate size of their two small identical ships, but the outstanding service, cuisine and unique unstructered lifestyle they afford.

Sea Dream I and Sea Dream II each have ninety-five staff to attend to just fifty-six bedrooms, each also has a certified Thai Spa with eight highly trained therepists, there kitchens create cuisine to die for, and they are the only passenger ships in the world with both indoor and an outdoor 'a la carte' restaurant, each able to accommodate every guest and both are open seating, of course.

Sea Dream has always been 'inclusive' with fares including gratuities, complimentary wines at lunch and dinner, use of recreational and water sports facilities - including the Marina and our range of water toys, all meals, complimentary champagne and an open bar.

Sailing in and around the yachting harbours of the French West Indies and Virgin Islands in winter, up close in the great cities and along fabulous coasts of Europe in the summer, these unique small ships deliver unique chic holidays, perfect for the way we live our lives today.

These 'cruise yachts' lend themselves to being an ideal sales promotion venue, a staff incentive scheme or you may require the whole ship as a private charter, your options are endless.

Ocean World Travel have rapidly become the leading travel agent for cruise holidays providing our customers with a highly personalised, professional and independent service that is second to none. As a company with over twenty years experience in the cruise industry we are perfectly placed to tailor make your cruise for you, and with no restrictions to choice we can offer you the best of all worlds.

If you have any thoughts on the above please give me a call on 023 80 714792 or you can e-mail me at, tony.musson@oceanworldtravel.com I can discuss your proposals and formulate a package that would be suitable to your requirements.

I look forward to hearing from you !

When Dining turns into disaster!

After checking out your luxury stateroom which will be your home for the next two weeks onboard, you peruse the many documents adorning the dressing table.

A mere glance at your dining instructions fills you with horror! Not only has your request for first sitting been totally ignored, you have been allocated a table of 8 on the other side of the restaurant from your friends!

Sounds familiar, maybe it’s happened to you? Let’s face it eating on a cruise is one of the most important part of your holiday, so how can you ensure everything works out well?

1. When you book your cruise ask for your preferred sitting, table request and restaurant sometimes this will not be available so you can ask to be wait listed.
2. If you have other family members or friends on the same cruise make sure you ask for the bookings to be ‘linked’, if both have booked through the same agent they will be able to do this without obtaining a unique reference no.
3. Also by booking early it is much easier to secure the restaurant, sitting and table of your choice.
4. If you booked late or your request was waitlisted your last option is to plea your case with the MaĆ®tre ‘D - upon boarding most cruiselines will hold a session to meet and discuss your requirements with the restaurant staff.

Tell us about your dining disasters….

Black Watch Christmas Cruise 2010

This was my first cruise on the Fred Olsen Black Watch with my husband and 7 year old son.
The journey was for 16 nights around the Canary Islands over Christmas and New Year. From our 1st steps onto this lovely quaint and elegant ship we were all made to feel very welcome by crew and passengers alike. I didn't get the impression that it was like this just because it is a Christmas cruise, I have been assured that there is a feeling of being part of a big family on the Black Watch all year around.

There was an excited anticipation on board as we set sail, leaving a very cold and wintery Southampton. Every public area was tastefully decorated with a wonderful array of gingerbread houses covered in sweets and icing. Twinkling lights and traditional trees.

Very quickly we all settled in, nothing was too much trouble for the staff, they are very attentive yet not overpowering and in no time at all on first name terms. It was by choice I preferred to be by 1st name, being a Madam was not something I feel comfortable with yet my husband was quite happy to be Sir.
(for once in his lifetime anyway)

I was concerned that this may not have been a cruise for young children, however the very small handful that were onboard were very well behaved. No special entertainment facilities are provided for the children, however, they did give them puzzles, arts and crafts to amuse themselves if they so wished. The crew also had daily games on the Wii console, table tennis and darts as much for the adults than children. ( there was a lot of fierce competition for reindeer points)

We arrived in La - Coruna on day 3. It was pouring down with rain, however, I needed to escape the ship! Don't worry, the escape was only to stop me eating non stop. Every meal was packed with flavorsome calories that made me feel like Verucca Salt from Charlie and the Chocolate factory, closely followed by Augustas Galloop AKA my husband. We waddled off the ship with the young one in tow ....to have a look at the local town. After 30 minutes of getting our barings and being soaking wet I was beginning to wish I had not avoided the tour lectures ..... to eat more food. That was one lesson learned very quickly.

The themed evenings onboard were embraced by everyone...The ship was buzzing ... a constant jolly atmosphere that was very addictive. The entertainment, the food, the drinks all carefully thought out and well planned.

The itinerary that we followed was fantastic. Madeira on Christmas Eve brought all the magic back to the festive season I had not truly felt since my childhood. The Christmas Carol Service with all the guests and staff brought " Joy To Us All" We had a suprise visit from Santa baring gifts for the children, with reindeer racing and live music to celebrate the festive day.

The next 7 days were perfect weather wise. Exceptionally calm seas and a relaxed atmosphere with a slower pace onboard as we all wound down from the Christmas celebrations. However, it didnt stop the amazing food - oh no ! not a chance there !. Infact, we made several delibrate journeys back to the ship for lunch to savour the Fish and Chips at the Marque cafe.

As the cruise neared the end, we left Tenerife a few minutes after the clock struck midnight and we welcomed in the New Year to a magnificant fireworks display and drifted off into the ocean to ...."we are sailing" .........

Queen of Crime Cruise

Following the 120th birthday celebrations of perhaps the greatest-ever British crime writer, Agatha Christie, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is launching an exclusive themed cruise, in conjunction with Agatha Christie Limited. This will be Balmoral’s 10-night L1102 cruise to Iberia and Morocco, departing from Southampton on 23rd April 2011.
Agatha Christie is the most popular crime writer ever to have lived, and during her life, wrote 80 bestselling novels and short story collections, as well as many plays, including the longest-running play in history – The Mousetrap – which is still thrilling audiences today, after a staggering 59 years!
As part of Fred. Olsen’s programme of special interests, The ArtsClub, this cruise will feature guests giving talks and lectures on the great crime writer and her work, including Agatha Christie’s grandson, Mathew Prichard, who will be enthralling guests with his personal memories of his grandmother.
Author, John Curran, will also be joining this special cruise. John is a lifelong fan and noted expert on Agatha Christie’s life and writings, and a frequent TV and radio broadcaster on the subject. His most recent book ‘Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebooks’, revealed the secrets of how she wrote, and has so far been translated into 16 languages.
There will also be live performances on board – featuring actors, along with selected members of the audience – of some of Agatha Christie’s rarely-heard 30-minute radio plays.
The cruise has an attractive itinerary, visiting La Coruna in Spain, romantic Casablanca in Morocco, Gibraltar, and the Portuguese ports of Portimao and Lisbon, before returning to Southampton. Prices start from £899 per person, based on two adults sharing an inside twin cabin, Grade ‘H’. The price includes all meals and entertainment on board, and port taxes. There is no extra charge for taking part in the Agatha Christie activities.

Luxury Cruising

Hi Everyone,

Amid all the doom and gloom that seems to be around at the moment I have noticed, especially last weekend that all the travel agents I passed by were full and many people were standing, waiting their turn to book this years holiday.

The great British public were seemingly not going to miss out on this years holiday!

For my sins I have been in the travel business for over fifty years and for the last fifteen plus of them I have specialised in cruising. Over the years I have managed to enjoy a great number of cruises on good, bad and indifferent cruise ships. As time has progressed, the bad ships are disappearing fast, the indifferent ones have improved by leaps and bounds and the good have become better and better.

Maritime design and engineering has advanced beyond recognition so that we now have ships that have upward of four thousand passengers. Maybe these are getting too large but they certainly bring economies of scale to the would be new cruiser seeking that economical adventure into a new holiday experience, either as a couple or as a family.

At Ocean World Travel my remit is to promote the advantages of taking a five / six star cruise on some of the worlds most luxurious cruise ships. These are just some of the companies to watch out for:- Hapag Lloyd, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Crystal, Seadream, Ponant, Hebridean and with capacities that range from 100 to 1500 passengers.

Over the past months many of these five / six star cruise companies are now offering truly inclusive rates that are very competetive and exceptionally good value for money when you compare them to a four star cruise ship.

Here are a couple of current comparisons:-
11 night Oriental Cruise, Balcony Suite, approx 360 sq.ft
4 Star Fly cruise, included an average spend for drinks, excursions, tips. Total £3284 pp.
5/6 Star Fly cruise, fully inclusive with business class air. Total £3986 pp.

12 night Mediterranean Cruise, Balcony Suite, approx 360 sq.ft
4 Star Fly cruise, included an average spend for drinks, excursions, tips. Total £3891 pp.
5/6 Star Fly cruise, fully inclusive with economy air. £3464 pp.

We keep our eyes open for any specials, sales or exceptional value for money cruises.
Currently 'singles' cruises are available with a five / six star cruise line and only a 10%
supplement, and so a ten night Caribbean cruise is £2799 fully inclusive.

So why not venture into the world of luxury cruises as many now offer that inclusive aspect,
giving you the opportunity to budget for your holiday cruise in advance.

Your comments and points of view would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!

I list below a number of luxury cruising opportunities that are currently available.
Interested! and for more information please e-mail me or call on 02380 714792.
